The Museum of Olive Oil in Castelnuovo di Farfa

Castelnuovo di Farfa, Map C3

Castelnuovo di Farfa is the home of the Museum of Olive Oil of the Sabine Hills.

The museum is situated in the old walls of Palazzo Perelly and expands an old mill, a bakery, the mediaeval Church of San Donato (9th century) and the outside.

Inside of Palazzo Perelly there is a multi-media section with photos and music which introduces the visitor to the numerous tracts of local identity and the beauty of the surrounding landscape as well as the town. It informs about the historical, anthropological and productive aspects.

The Museum of Olive Oil houses a rare collection of Sabine oil presses that are evidence of the productive transformation of this oleic region over the past four centuries.

The millstone of the old olive mill was powered by animals and dates back to the eighteenth century. In the archaeological site of the Church of San Donate is situated the garden of olive trees from all over the world. This part of the museum is also dedicated to the celebration of olive oil as a symbol of the spirituality of one of the most ancient regions in the world.

The museum is so unique and special thanks to the presence of a section which features five renown artists Alik Cavaliere, Gianandrea Gazzola, Maria Lai, Hidetoshi Nagasawa and Ille Strazza. Their sculptures and music celebrate and interpret olive oil and its presence in the traditions of contemporary society.
